Generative Engine Optimization for brands that need to be cited, not just ranked

Making your content retrievable, quotable and correctly attributed when someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Claude instead of a search engine. Undertaken only once the technical foundation holds.

The problem

There is no second result in an AI answer

A search results page gives ten brands a chance. An AI answer names one or two, and the rest do not exist. That changes the economics of visibility completely: being the fourth-best page on a topic used to be worth something, and now it is worth almost nothing.

It also changes what you are optimising for. Ranking is about a whole page competing against other pages. Citation is about a passage being lifted out of your page and attributed to you. Those are not the same craft, and a page that ranks well can still be unquotable — too hedged, too buried, too contradicted by three other pages on your own site.

The failure mode I see most often is a brand that has spent a year on GEO tactics while the site still renders client-side, so no answer engine has ever successfully read a page. The order matters more than the tactics.

Definition

What GEO actually is, and what it is not

GEO is: structuring content so a language model can locate a self-contained answer inside it, verify who is making the claim, and cite the source without ambiguity. In practice that is passage-level structure, entity clarity, and consistency of facts across every surface you control.

GEO is not: a keyword list for ChatGPT, a schema plugin, or a monthly report of brand mentions. It is also not a replacement for SEO. Generative engines do not maintain a private index of the web — they overwhelmingly read pages that conventional retrieval already surfaced. Anyone selling AI visibility without auditing crawlability and rendering first is selling a layer with nothing underneath it.

The honest limitation: you cannot buy a citation and nobody can guarantee one. What you can do is make your page the easiest correct answer to quote, and remove the reasons a model would pick someone else.

What is included

Five deliverables

Answer-first content restructuring

Rewriting so the direct answer to a question sits in a self-contained passage near the top, in language a model can lift without needing the surrounding paragraphs for context. Applied to the pages that actually have a chance, not the whole site.

You get: a restructured page set, with the before-and-after passage for each

Semantic entity mapping and coverage gaps

Which entities — products, conditions, ingredients, regulations, places — your topic requires, which ones you cover, and which competitors cover that you do not. This is where most coverage decisions should come from instead of keyword volume.

You get: an entity coverage matrix and a ranked gap list

Cannibalisation control

Finding where several of your own pages answer the same question and consolidating them. Critical here, because splitting signals between four pages is how none of them becomes the cited one.

You get: a consolidation and redirect plan, page by page

Entity clarity and schema

Organization and Person schema, and — more importantly — making your facts agree everywhere: site, LinkedIn, directories, profiles. A model that cannot resolve who you are will not attribute a claim to you.

You get: a schema implementation spec and an off-site consistency checklist

Prompt-set monitoring

A defined set of real buyer prompts, tested across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude on a fixed cadence, so movement is measured rather than felt. Arabic prompts included where the market warrants it.

You get: a baseline visibility report and a repeatable prompt set you keep

How it runs

Four stages, in this order

01  ·  Week 1

Foundation check

Confirm the site is crawlable and renders server-side. If it is not, the engagement becomes technical SEO first — I will say so rather than proceed.

02  ·  Week 1–2

Baseline

Define the prompt set from real buyer questions, test it across four engines, and record where you appear, where a competitor does, and what is being cited instead.

03  ·  Week 3 onward

Restructure

Entity mapping, cannibalisation consolidation, answer-first rewriting and schema — applied in that order.

04  ·  Monthly

Re-measure

The same prompt set, same cadence, against the baseline. Citation movement is slow and lumpy; a single month tells you nothing.

Regulated sectors

GEO under medical and regulatory review

Most of my client work is pharmaceutical and healthcare, which is the hardest place to do this well. Answer-first structure pulls in one direction — say the thing plainly, near the top — and med-legal review pulls in the other, because an unhedged sentence is exactly what a reviewer strikes out.

The workable path is to separate the claim from the qualification: a clear, sourced, self-contained answer, with the regulatory context adjacent rather than woven into the same sentence. That survives review and remains quotable. It takes longer than consumer content and it needs the reviewer in the room early, not at the end.

Questions

GEO questions I get asked

Is GEO replacing SEO?

No. Generative engines overwhelmingly read pages that conventional retrieval already found, so GEO sits on top of SEO rather than replacing it. If a crawler cannot reach, render and trust your page, an answer engine will not quote it either. The order is SEO first, GEO second, and it is deliberate.

How do you measure whether ChatGPT cites my brand?

With a fixed prompt set built from real buyer questions, tested across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude on a regular cadence, recorded against a baseline taken before any work starts. Without a baseline and a fixed prompt set, any claim about AI visibility is unfalsifiable.

Does GEO work for Arabic-language AI answers?

Yes, and the competition is far thinner than in English. The complication is that Arabic prompt behaviour differs by market — an Egyptian buyer and a Saudi buyer phrase the same question differently — so the prompt set has to be built per market rather than translated.

Do I need technical SEO fixed first?

Almost always. The most common wasted year I see is a brand running GEO tactics on a site that renders only in client-side JavaScript, so no engine has ever read a page. I check this before anything else and will tell you if that is where the money should go.

How long before AI citations appear?

Slower and lumpier than ranking movement, and genuinely variable — the models retrain and update on their own schedule, not yours. Expect to measure over quarters, not weeks, and be suspicious of anyone quoting you a timeline in days.

What can GEO not do for a regulated pharma brand?

It cannot make an unhedged medical claim quotable, and it should not try. What it can do is structure the sourced, approved version so it is the easiest correct answer to lift — and make sure that when a model does answer, the attribution lands on you rather than on an aggregator.

Do you guarantee AI citations?

No, and be careful with anyone who does. Nobody controls what a model quotes. I guarantee the diagnosis, the restructuring work, the measurement design and the baseline you can hold me to.
